Jingzhou CollageJingzhou is an ancient walled city located in the southern part of Hubei Province. By Chinese standards, it’s a relatively small city, topping out at just over five million people. The smaller population provides a “real Chinese experience” for foreign teachers, and the size is often a blessing when trying to find a seat on the bus or trying to catch taxi to the train station. The smaller city feel is certainly present near the Aston school which is located in the heart of the ancient quarters. The pace of life is a bit slower, traffic is manageable, and the sidewalks are easy to navigate at all hours of the day. This hometown feel makes it easier to integrate into the community, and really immerse yourself into Chinese culture.

Jingzhou CollageAbout a ten minute walk from the foreign teacher’s apartment lies China’s largest river, the Yangtze. The river runs through the city, lined by gorgeous parks that bloom with cherry blossoms in the spring. It’s a beautiful place to rent a bike, ride along the ancient wall, visit one of the many temples or museums, and even dress in traditional robes to have your picture taken.

Jingzhou CollageWeather in the city is characterized by extremes with short cold winters and searingly hot and humid summers. Spring is a rainy season, and fall is pleasant but short.

Jingzhou CollageThe neighborhood surrounding the school and the foreign teacher’s apartment is very quiet and the locals are extremely friendly. Jingzhou is still quite new to foreigners, so be prepared to receive lots of special attention from locals. For those who enjoy relaxing, there are two places that do traditional Chinese massage for under 45 rmb per hour right across the street from the school. There’s a gym down the street for the health conscious, and if you’re interested in picking up a new instrument, Jingzhou is well-known for its music training with numerous music shops and training schools open all over the town.

Jingzhou CollageWhen the serenity of your neighborhood leaves you craving a bit more lively atmosphere, fear not because Shashi is just a 1 yuan bus ride away. Shashi is where you can find the nightlife when the ancient quarters shut down around ten at night. It’s the central urban area of Jingzhou that hosts massive shopping malls, bars, nightclubs, food streets, billiards clubs, movie theaters, KTV (karaoke clubs), and endless restaurants. Shashi is also home to a Walmart for your weekly peanut butter fix, and it also serves as Jingzhou’s historical center where you can visit the 2,000 year old man who has been well preserved in one of Jingzhou’s many museums.

Jingzhou CollageFor those coming to China with wanderlust in their hearts, Jingzhou is a prime location for the traveler. Not only does Shashi sport its own airport and railroad station, but Jingzhou is a centralized location that makes trips to Beijing and Shanghai easy, affordable, and convenient on your days off. Wuhan, Hubei’s capital, is just an hour and a half train ride away, while Yichang, home to the “Three Gorges” and scenic mountain trails, is a mere thirty minute journey by train.
